We’re Back!

Good news, everyone! We’re back from the video game industry’s annual dog & pony show, the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Before we left for the show, we let everyone know that we intended to keep updating throughout the week.

As you all undoubtedly noticed, this didn’t quite work out. We forgot how hectic and busy E3 can be! We were on our feet and away from our computers from morning until night, and simply had no time to keep up with the week’s social game news!

But, we’re official back home and settled, so normal updates are resuming… right now!

Social Game Central is at E3!

Hello social game fanatics! We just wanted to let you know that we’re attending the world’s biggest video game conference, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, in Los Angeles this week.

The good news is we’re meeting up with many of the folks that create the biggest and best social games, so we should have lots of exclusive scoops and news for you, when we get back. The bad news is that we’re going to be on our feet running around the Los Angeles Convention Center non-stop for four days straight! Because we’re going to be away from our quiet and distraction-free desks, keeping to our normal update schedule will be very tough.

So, we’ll do our best to cover the biggest social game stories this week, but we most likely will not be able to bring you our normal comprehensive coverage.

Normal updates will resume this Friday, June 14th.

Happy Island Adds Cultural Decorations

Happy Island developer Crowdstar apparently decided this week that players needed to add a little class to their tourist destinations. A variety of cultural decorations have been added to the Happy Island store, along with one new attraction.

The new decorations are: Paleolithic Henge (don’t call it Stonehenge), Discus Thrower, The Thinker, and… a “Parrot Perch” pirate statue. No, the pirate statue doesn’t make sense to us either. All four are for sale for coins.

The new attraction is Mauryan Stupa. It is a limited edition, with only 6500 copies left, and is being sold for 55 FB$ ($5.50). It holds a maximum of 1900 coins.

Social City Adds Third District & Makes Improvements

Social City developer Playdom finally opened up access to the game’s southwest district – the third district released, counting the initial land players begin the game with. A variety of other small tweaks and improvements were also rolled out, today.

Players have two ways to unlock the district: they can buy it outright for 40 City Bucks, or they can enlist the help of their friends and attempt to get 30 “votes.” Players can earn votes by making a Facebook wall post. Each player that clicks on your wall post earns you one vote. Most players are (quite correctly) guessing that obtaining 30 votes in this manner is a pretty tall order, so they have taken to trading votes on various official and unofficial Social City forums.

A new tweak was made to the game’s gift tab, as well. In addition to sending gifts to friends, players can now request a specific gift, as well. Players simply need to highlight the gift they want, and then click the “Ask for Gift” button.

Finally, players were given a couple different options for placing rush orders at their factories. The easiest way to rush an order is to buy a Mandatory Caffeination for your workers for 1 City Buck, to finish the order instantly. Players can also request and then spend Motivational Posters from their friends.

Happy Aquarium Adds Hammerhead Shark

Happy Aquarium developer Crowdstar has added another giant aquatic animal: A hammerhead shark! This shark follows the game’s first giant addition, a Giant Sunfish, which was about 10X the size of a normal fish.

This purple hammerhead is for sale for 66 FB$ ($6.60). It is a limited addition, with just over 25,000 left.

One interesting observation: when we blogged about the Giant Sunfish three days ago, there were over 36,000 left. Now, there are only 3000 still available! If Crowdstar really sold 33,000 of these giant fish, that represents over $217,000 in money made (minus Facebook’s cut)! If those are true sales figures and haven’t been fudged, it is probably safe to say many more premium giant fish are now in the works.

Treasure Isle Adds Lava Mangos Gift

Treasure Isle developer Zynga released a new gift fruit today: Lava Mangos. We probably wouldn’t normally devote an entire blog post to one new gift, but in this case, we’ll make an exception.

These Lava Mangos provide players with 20 energy, but only when the player is “inside a volcano.” This is the latest hint that the release of the Fire God Mountain volcano maps is coming soon.

Maybe it will be too hot inside for normal fruit to work? Zynga did hint that players would need a special piece of equipment to enter the volcano (our bet is on something players have to construct with the help of their friends), but perhaps only special fruit can be used, too?

We’ll find out soon enough. In the meantime, better start stocking up on these Lava Mangos!

Hotel City Custom Backgrounds Coming Soon

Hotel City developer Playfish gave players a sneak peak at two upcoming features, today: luxuries, and custom backgrounds!

Players will be able to collect luxuries (gold watches and 1st class plane tickets were given as examples) slowly, as they play the game. These luxuries can then be spent on special rewards. For players that don’t want to wait, luxuries will also be purchasable with Playfish Cash.

The first two luxury items up for grabs are new, themed backgrounds: Night Time and New York! New themed rooms to match these new backgrounds will also be released.

A new background can really change the personality of a hotel – we’re excited to see what other backgrouns Playfish has in the works.

Hotel City Adds Pastel Walls & More

Hotel City developer Playfish released another unthemed collection of items in their Hotel Sim, this week. It seems as though Playfish is still stocking up the game’s decoration “basics” – more elaborate, themed item sets are most likely coming eventually.

New items include: Peach Bathroom Set, Ironing Board, four pastel wall colors, Peach Toilet, Fire Escape Sign, Window Blind, and several more. The items are available for a mix of coins and Playfish Cash. We have pictures of all the new additions below.

FarmVille Adds More Island Items

Another set of tropical island items were added to FarmVille, tonight. Players now have even more options for turning their dusty farm into a true island paradise. Interestingly, some of these new items don’t expire for 12 days – considerably longer than the first batch of island items, added earlier this week. Perhaps Zynga has decided to expand the item set further?

In any case, tonight’s new items are: Hot Pink Flamingo, Island Stage, Island Grill, Island Totem, Sand Hammock, Sky Hammock, Bamboo Fence, Tree Village, Island Resort, Island Shanty, Spider Monkey, and Pink Hibiscus. We have pictures of all the new additions below.

The Pink Hibiscus crop can be planted for 140 coins, and grows to maturity in 22 hours. It can be harvested for 310 coins and 2 XP.

FarmVille Releases World Cup Decorations

FarmVille developer Zynga caught World Cup fever tonight, adding a handful of soccer (or football, for our international readers) decorations and animals to the FarmVille marketplace.

The new items are: Soccer Field, Referee Cow, and Kick Ewe. All three are for sale for Farm Cash, and all three have considerable charm. The soccer field features animal players, including a very large elephant. The Kick Ewe sheep megafan is probably our favorite, though.

All three additions are available for 31 more days, so it is probably safe to assume that more World Cup items are on the way.
