Social City Water Tower Saga Continues

As most SGC readers probably know, Social City businesses and residences are almost all animated in one way or another. One little detail that many players might have overlooked when the game launched was a tiny animated couple on top of the Social City Water Tower.

At first they were doing something we’re almost positive was very naughty. The animation was then changed to the two having a much more wholesome picnic. Later on the image was then changed again, to show one of them dangling from the Water Tower’s edge, about to fall off the side!

The Water Tower saga continued today, with a helicopter entering the scene, attempting to “rescue” the woman in distress. The rescue doesn’t seem to be going too well, though. She is swinging quite precariously!

Social City Adds Water Park Raffle Items

Social City developer Playdom has updated the in-game item raffle, with a new water park mega building up for grabs. To obtain the new water park, players first need to collect all eight parts.

Each time a player spins the wheel in the in-game newspaper, they will receive one of the eight Water Park pieces, chosen at random. Each spin costs 8 City Bucks, meaning players will be spending a minimum of 64 CB$ (about $12) to get this attraction, and potentially much more, if they have unlucky raffle wheel spins.

Personally, we aren’t big fans of this raffle format. We think a good rule of thumb is to only allow games of chance in social game elements involving in-game currency. Once real cash is involved, it makes us uneasy that some players will spend much more money obtaining an item than others.

My Empire Adds New Chichen Itza Wonder

A new Wonder is available for My Empire players to build: Chichen Itza. To complete construction however, player will need to first defeat plenty of the new enemy pirates.

Each pirate defeated will give players either coins, Emerald, Ruby, or Topaz. These rare goods can then be used to complete construction of the Wonder. The Wonder might not be historically accurate, considering the town My Empire players are building is ostensibly Roman, but it certainly does look cool, doesn’t it?

My Empire Pirate Event Begins

In a clever bit of cross promotion, My Empire players may have noticed today that their island empire has been surrounded by pirates. But not just any pirates. These are pirates from another new Playfish game, Pirates Ahoy!

Players can defeat the pirate army in much the same way as any other My Empire battle – through superior numbers. Battles in My Empire are automatically determined. The bigger a player’s army size, the greater the odds of victory. Players can increase the size of their army by hiring their friends as generals, and hiring more soldiers by spending some Gold.

My Empire Giving Away Free Premium Items

My Empire developer Playfish is giving players a chance to earn a few free items that normally cost Playfish Cash, but only if they work their social muscles. Players that add or recruit new My Empire neighbors can gain up to six exclusive rewards.

A new PF Cash decoration is unlocked for every five new neighbors a player gains, meaning a whopping 30 neighbors are needed in total to gain all the free prizes. But hey, free is free, right?

Items up for grabs as part of this promotion include a Fish Fountain, a Statue of Poseidon, a Lion Fountain, and more.

Social City Releases West District

Social City developer Playdom released a fifth district for players to develop, today. The West District is now available for purchase.

Every Social City district is unlocked in a different way. Log in for enough consecutive days, get the help of enough friends, etc. This new West District probably has the most straightforward unlocking mechanism yet: players simply have to pay 200,000 coins to gain access.

When the district is initially unlocked it is a standard 9×9 beginner grid, which players can then expand at their own pace.

My Empire Releases Constructible Moai Statues

My Empire developer Playfish has given players another historical treasure to construct. Players that have fully revealed their new world map and explored the new Volcano Island can now get to work constructing the new Moai Statues wonder!

To complete construction, players will need to collect 40 items total, ten each of: Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, and Emerald. These items are found when exploring Volcano Island itself.

The Moai statues might not be historically accurate, since My Empire players are intended to be Romans (these statues are found on Easter Island in real life), but we think they still make a cool and imposing addition to Volcano Island.

My Town July 29 Update

It’s Thursday, which means new items have been added to Broken Bulb’s city building title My Town! Both of today’s additions are very kid friendly.

Players can now purchase a Daycare and a Playground Park. The Daycare features a tinker toy roof, and the playground has slides, a merry-go-round, swings, and most of the other features any good kid’s park should include.

My Empire Releases Major Expansion

My Empire from Playfish started out as a fairly typical city building title. Its Roman theme helped set it apart from the pack, but the gameplay would be recognized by most facebook gamers. Players built some buildings to increase their population, others to keep their citizens happy, etc.

Unbeknownst to us, Playfish had big plans for the game. Players can now explore other islands, raise an army, and do battle with local barbarian tribes!

It all starts with the game’s new map screen. Initially, the map is hidden – broken up into 30 fragments. Every day, players are given 10 free fragments, allowing them to uncover a portion of the map. Players can speed up this process by asking their friends for fragments, or buying them with Playfish Cash.

Next, players must construct the new Barracks building, to begin raising an army. Players can spend their gold to recruit soldiers, and increase the capacity of their army by hiring their friends as generals.

Once players have uncovered the entire map and have recruited their army, the neighboring islands can be explored! Players might find a barbarian outpost to defeat, or a volcano island to explore. All activities give players the opportunity to earn bonus resources.

My Empire is shaping up into a true empire, and not just a Roman town!

Social City Adds Special Tudor Village Gift Set

Social City developer Playdom announced a special gift event, today. Each day for the next five days, a new Tudor Village gift will be released on the Social City gifts tab. Players that manage to collect all five will be given the limited edition Tudor Festival Square (complete with clock tower) for free!

Today’s free gift is the Tudor Mayor’s Estate. Wednesday through Saturday will each have their own one-day-only Tudor item.

If players miss one of the free gifts, Playdom has given Social City fans another shot at completing the set, with a special Gift Raffle. The raffle costs eight City Bucks, and gives players one of the five Tudor gifts at random.
